Most often used for data that fits well with diagrams and charts, Visio takes standard images and allows flowcharts and decision diagrams to utilize those images to explain data.

It is a must-have tool if you work in networking, almost all big organizations have a Visio Diagram with the network connections and interactions between departments with the downside that the diagram is as good as the knowledge that person making it has about Visio but even badly made diagrams have good enough information to be able to understand the network even if they lack layers.

I was not a fan of Visio until I had to deal with several networks lacking proper documentation, even worse than not having documentation is having bad documentation the worse ofender was a network diagram made on photoshop without the source image so any changes were made on top of a png image and some areas were resized in a way that the ip value was not readable anymore. Visio provides a much needed standardization when dealing with diagrams, it might not be pretty but is a common point of contact that different teams across several technologies can agree upon.

The most important part is that being good at using Visio I’m keeping my job for the time being and in the mid of this pandemic that is actually a big thing and even if I lost it I could find another one relatively easily. It’s just the industry standard for network diagrams it doesn’t matter if they are WiFi, switching, security, data center diagrams at the end almost every one gets translated into a Visio file since it is a common point of contact that different areas and vendors understand in a pretty good way.

The customization of the shapes is a great feature, allows me to create for each customer their own shapes to create the workflows. this give me a great option to give something specific for my costumers.

I do not like the connection (arrows) when I’m creating a workflows, it gets pretty messy. I’m as a person that use it a lot , can say that I can manage the connection between the shapes, but for a person that is new will always be really hard at the beginning.
